Elon Musk Got Node for Human Brain Implant Trials

Neuralink, Biotech Giant, Cleared Path for the First Human Trial:

Neuralink, a brain chip startup by the tech giant and investor Elon Musk, got permission from the government authorities on September 20, 2023. Neuralink had been waiting for the ‘Yes’ for a  long time.

It has started inviting proposals from interested candidates on its website link. Candidates, as per the node, who have paralysis due to cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis are eligible for the trials.

Neuralink human brain implant project:

After the Food and Drug Administration [FDA] node in May 2023, an independent review board approved Elon Musk’s grand project in September 2023.

The project is named “PRIME”. It stands for Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface. As per the project, the ‘Biotechnology Startup’ began the process for its first human trial of brain implants.

The testing would be performed on paralysis patients of cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS].

During the trial, robotic surgery will be conducted to implant a brain-computer interface [BCI] in the region of the brain that controls the intention part.

Neuralink says its initial goal is “to enable human beings to control a computer cursor or keyboard using their thoughts alone.” The chip installed in the brain would record and send brain signals to an app.

The study will last for 6 years, where 18 months of at-home and clinic visits followed by follow-up visits over five years. The company, Neuralink, asked for 10 people for trial but it has not disclosed how many have been granted by the FDA.

Popular author Walter Isaacson writes in his new book about the passion or obsession of Musk for science fiction ‘Neural Lace.’ It is based on Iain Banks’s famous human-machine interface technology book.

Neuralink previous records:

The Biotech giants implanted BCI in animals successfully in the past. It showed a video chip-installed pig and his work in 2020. However, it is also under scrutiny after a monkey died in project testing in 2022 during an effort to get the animal to play Pong, a video game.

The company has been trying to seek clearance from the FDA since 2019 for its human trials. However, the authority is concerned regarding the safety of the other parts of the brain or possible tissue damage during the implant of the chip.

Mask has grand wisdom for Neuralink. Once he said, “It would facilitate speedy surgical insertions of its chip devices to treat conditions like obesity, autism, depression, and schizophrenia.”

India took a critical move and started the 'Vaibhav' brain gain scheme by reversing the brain drain. Nearly 75 Indian diaspora scientists may return and serve in different projects in India over the next three years.

Under the government's new fellowship scheme, multiple science and technology projects would be worth around Rs. 80 crore. As per government sources, the first batch of 22 fellows has already been selected. These candidates are expected to join the institutes in April this year.

India will be The Third Biggest Economy By 2028, Developed Nation By 2047

Vaibhav Scheme By the Department of Science and Technology:

The Department of Science and Technology [DST] government of India has launched a scheme named Vaibhav. Under the Vaibhav scheme, the DST has already completed its first call for proposals and initiated the second call.

According to Dr. Charu Aggrawal from the DST, the call is being made to all scientists of Indian origin engaged in active research in recognized institutes abroad. They should have at least five years to collaborate with a reputed institute/university, including the IITs in India.

Musk said about the xAI, if you are not a fan of humor, this AI tool may not be your cup of tea. Grok has been designed to leverage real-time knowledge from the X platform that empowers it to tackle even the spiciest of queries. Although the xAI is still in beta, under the two months of belt training, it will refine and expand its capabilities.

The Goal Behind xAI or Grok:

When Elon Musk introduced 'Gork', explained that with the help of Grok, people will understand and learn. The goal of xAI is to help people gain knowledge, understand and learn.

It is powered by Grok-1 LLM which was developed over four months. Its prototype, Grok-0, was trained with 33 billion parameters whereas its counterpart Meta's LLM was trained with 70 billion parameters.

Capabilities of Grok-1:

Grok-1 showed impressive capabilities by scoring 63.2% on the HumanEval coding task and 73% on MMLU. However, it may not outshine GPT-4 but progressed significantly compared to Grok-0 in a short span.

The Grok-1 performed well on various benchmarks, like MMLU, HumanEval, a Python code generation test, and MATHS which covers middle and high school maths exams.

In another hand-graded test in 2023, the Hungarian national high school finals in mathematics, Gork-1 scored 59% surpassing Claude 2's 55% and GPT-4's 58%.

The above-given data shows that Grok-1 has comparable power to OpenAI's GPT-3.5 but not as advanced as the latest GPT-4. xAI officials claimed that despite using less training data, Grok-1 can compete with models requiring larger datasets and more computing power.

Training of Grok-1:

According to xAI authorities, Grok-1 is trained using a custom stack based on Kubernetes, Rust, and JAX. The Grok-1 has a real-time internet access design that enables it to provide up-to-date data or information.

Neuralink sets a historic record for advancing biological science and technology on 19 Feb 2024. The first human patient implanted with a Neuralink brian-chip has recovered and is moving a 'mouse around the computer screen just by thinking.'

Neuralink startup founder and visionary biotech giant, Elon Musk confirms the news and says the first human implanted with a brain chip appears to have fully recovered and can control a computer mouse using their thoughts.

Elon Musk Got Node for Human Brain Implant Trials

Neuralink Get Node For Implanting The Telepathy Brain-Chip:

Neuralink successfully implanted the Telepathy chip in the patient last month after approval. All concerned US authorities and administration granted permission for human trial recruitment in September 2023, last year.

Musk writes on X [Twitter],

"As we are aware, progress is good, and the patient seems to have made a full recovery from the neural effects. The patient can move a mouse by just thinking around the screen."

Elon elaborated that Neuralink is now trying to get as many mouse button clicks as possible from the implanted chip human.

In a surgical move, Neuralink uses a robot to surgically place a brain-computer chip implant in a specific region of the brain that controls the intention to move. The system consists of a computer chip attached to tiny flexible threads stitched into the brain by a 'sewing machine' like a robot.

The robot removes a small chunk of the skull and connects the thread-like electrodes to specific areas of the human brain. It stitches up the hole, and the only visible remains is a scar left behind.

Musk said that the incision procedure takes just 30 minutes. It does not even require general anesthesia. The patient will be able to return home on the same day. However, it is still unclear whether all the promises apply to the first patient to receive the implant. Musk says he or she is recovering well.

Purpose of Implanting Neuralink Brain Chip:

According to Elon Musk, the company's initial goal is to let people control a computer cursor or keyboard by their thoughts and communicate wirelessly. It works like communicating wirelessly with the world, replacing a piece of the skull with a smartwatch.

The Telepathy chip would enable us to share our thoughts, fears, hopes, and anxieties without demeaning ourselves. It would work with written or language-spoken claims of the startup.

Neural Ink's Prime Study Telepathy and Controversy:

The Implantation of brain chip 'Telepathy' in a human is part of Neuralink's Prime study. It is a trial to evaluate the safety of the implant and the surgical robot that does the procedure.

Elon Musk has grand ambitions for Neuralink. He says it would facilitate speedy surgical insertions of its chip devices to treat conditions like obesity, autism, depression, and schizophrenia.

It has faced repeated calls for security regarding its safety protocols and animal testing. The biotech startup has spent the past few years testing the implant on animals, which has provided mixed results.

Elon Musk, in the year 2020 presentation, unveiled the Neuralink chip to the public for the 'very first' time. It demonstrated the chip functions on a pig named Gertrude. Gertrude's brain signals were visualized on the screen in real-time. She snuffled around her pen that was being picked up by her implant.

Another pig involved in the Neuralink chip demonstration had once had an implant but then had it removed and was living a healthy life. The following year, Elon did another demonstration with a macaque monkey. Macaque was playing a computer game by thinking alone.

However, Neuralink confirmed in February 2022 that monkeys had died during its tests. However, they denied any animal abuse in front after a complaint by a non-profit organization Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine [PCRM] to the US Department of Agriculture.

Elon Musk's an Influencer and Global Empire:

Today, Elon Musk stands among the top list of billionaires. He is the mastermind or bestmind behind some of the most ingenious technology projects of the modern era. The billionaire entrepreneur is the boss of carmaker Tesla, private space firm SpaceX, and brain chip-computer interface startup Neuralink.

Musk, who routinely tops the list as the world's richest person, became more famous than ever when he bought Twitter in 2022. He has invested his $192 billion fortune in. Neuralink was valued at about $5 billion last year. Whether you hate or like him, you cannot avoid him.
